Understanding PIPA / SOPA -- THE FILM!

His organization's YouTube channel here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/NewLeftMedia/featured

The video above summarizes and explains the causes and effects of PIPA and SOPA. As well as the corporations behind it, and how it is being perceived in the media. They talk about how PIPA and SOPA will work. One of the way the bills would work is by cutting off the flow of money to the sites. For example, Wikileaks was one of the sites that discontinued publishing from paypal companies to prevent users from sending money. The second way was by ordering Internet Service Providers (ISP) to remove the site from their index. The interviewees in the video go on to explain how it's success would be limited as people would still be able to access it.

Also they would have search engines like Google, to not allow results for blocked sites to appear in their site. This is ceshorship. Guy in the video says, what if other countries did that? How would that help America's want for globalization.

The bills state Corporations that want to remove sites, will have no liability if they do shut down a site. And if the financial service providers (paypal etc.) have the ability to cut off their use in sites, they would possibly be able to have a position to be able to shut down sites that threaten their companies.
Now the corporations that support and are behind this bill. They are the Media companies. They have lobbyists that contribute 100 million a year to Congress. These companies have so much power over Congress that realistically "the people" would have minimal influence towards Congress. The Media Corporations that are behind this bill, Time Warner, News Corporation, Comcast, Walt Disney, National Amusement; all own the major media outlets. And if notitced, one can see how the major media outlets have absolutely not reported on these bills at all. They do not want the American Public to know about these issues, so they can slip it and put it into law, before they ever have a chance to have a say anything about it.

Analysis:

  • The writer Chase Whiteside, creates a video on Youtube, to give people an easier understanding of what the bills SOPA and PIPA are and what they would do. The big corporations are the ones behind the bill, so major media channels barely or do not report on the SOPA and PIPA bill. Independent columnists, bloggers, websites like Google, are the voice for the opposition of this bill.
  • In reports and blogs, the content is very factual. Trying to explain what would happen, and why it should be stopped. In the video, they interview a Free Press Journalist and a spokesman for the Center of Democracy&Technology, and go behind the creators of the bill, the effects, how the bills would work, and the global perception of the bill. The facts for the effects of the bill are straightforward. Their is a clip on the video where it shows the image of the bill, stating how corporations using the bill, would be exempt from liability to any damage that would be caused from shutting down a site. Every media channel, explains how this bill would lead to censorship, and further empowerment of big corporations.
  • Reporting on video, makes it easier for people who want to to learn about the bill. Especially at our time, where people would rather watch a video rather than read an essay. Also on video, people can see first hand how it is effecting our society first hand.
