Egyptian Revolution: The Beginning

On January 25, 2011, the people of Egypt started a revolution that would change history forever. The media played a vital role in its beginnings, and is still crucial to its perseverance. It all started out as a simple Facebook group that planned a peaceful protest, and as it progressed into a true revolution, the rest of the mass media began to report on it. Here are four different media sources where you can learn all about it:

1. Social Media:
Facebook – كلنا خالد سعيد
It all started with this popular Facebook page (picture on right). Though the text on the site is in Arabic, you can easily decode it with Google Translate. The “Personal Information” on the page translates to: “Page was created to defend Khalid Saeed Allah's mercy against what he suffered from injustice, and God willing, to become a platform to defend the right of every Egyptian to a decent life

2. Newspaper: New York Times – The First Hours of Egypt’s Revolution (January 4th, 2012)
In this online version of the print article, Adel Abdel Ghafar shares his vivid experiences of the beginning of the revolution in writing and videos.

3. Blog: Tumblr – Uprisings In Translation
This personal blog through Tumblr shows expressive graffiti (in addition to leaflets, posters, cartoons, and conversations) that communicate powerful messages through a particular form of art.

4. TV Broadcast: -- NBC: Rage and Revolution in Egypt (Febuary 11, 2011)
NBC Nightly News gives a report on the status of the revolution in their series, “Rage and Revolution in Egypt: The Middle East in Crisis.”
